Paraxylene mainly uses as a feedstock for the production of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a type of plastic that widely uses for bottles, fabrics, films and other applications. PET is produced by reacting paraxylene with oxygen to form purified terephthalic acid (PTA) or dimethyl terephthalate (DMT), which are then polymerized with ethylene glycol. Paraxylene is a colorless liquid with a sweet odor and a low solubility in water. It is flammable and can cause irritation to the eyes, skin and respiratory system if exposed to high concentrations.
